Caute and Instapaper.

Instapaper is built for reading what you saved. Caute is built for keeping it, of every kind, and finding the passage again later. If reading is the whole job, Instapaper may be all you need.

In their words

“Save Anything. Read Anywhere.”

Side by side

What is the same

  • Both save a page in one click and keep a queue of what you mean to read.
  • Both let you highlight a passage and write a note on it.
  • Both read an article aloud.

Stay with Instapaper if

  • You want reading to be the whole app, with nothing else to learn.
  • You read on a Kindle, Kobo or Boox, and want what you save sent there.
  • You want speed reading or its AI voices.

Move to Caute if

  • You want full-text search and a kept copy of every page on the free plan.
  • You keep more than articles: PDFs, files, email, recordings and your own notes.
  • You want to find the sentence later, by its words or by what it means.
  • You want Claude, ChatGPT or another assistant to search what you saved and cite the passage it used.

Moving from Instapaper

  1. In Instapaper, open Settings, then Export, and download the CSV file.
  2. In Caute, open Settings, then Import a library, and choose Import from Instapaper.
  3. Choose the file. Caute reads each link again and keeps the page; your folders become tags under instapaper/.

Questions

Do my folders come across?

Yes, as tags under instapaper/, and what you starred or archived keeps that.

Will importing the file twice make duplicates?

No. Importing the same file again adds nothing twice.

Who can see what I import?

Only you. Everything lands in your private inbox, and nothing is shared until you move it into a shared space.
