Caute and Readwise.

Readwise is a reading app with a library behind it. Caute is a library with a reader in front of it. Which one you want depends on where you spend the hour.

In their words

“The first read-it-later app built for power readers.”

Side by side

What is the same

  • Both keep your highlights and bring them back to look at again.
  • Both follow feeds and newsletters.
  • Both let an assistant read your library over MCP.

Stay with Readwise if

  • You read mostly inside the app and want its reading view, Ghostreader and text to speech.
  • You want highlights from your other reading apps gathered on their own, without exporting files.

Move to Caute if

  • You want a free plan on which everything you caught stays readable and searchable.
  • You keep more than reading: files, email, recordings and your own notes.
  • You want to find the sentence later, by its words or by what it means.
  • You want what your assistants remember kept beside the page it came from, where you can read it and make them forget it.

Moving from Readwise

  1. In Readwise, open the export page of your account and choose CSV.
  2. In Caute, open Settings, then Import a library, and choose Import from Readwise.
  3. Choose the file. Each book or article becomes a note of its highlights, with your notes and tags.

Questions

Do my highlights come across?

Yes. Each book or article becomes a note of its highlights, with the notes and tags you gave them.

Do the documents I saved in Reader come too?

Not with this file, which holds your highlights. A document you saved without highlighting is not in it.

Will importing the file twice make duplicates?

No. Importing the same file again adds nothing twice.

Who can see what I import?

Only you. Everything lands in your private inbox, and nothing is shared until you move it into a shared space.
