Cards
Everything you catch gets a card: a web page, a PDF, an email, an image, a recording, a conversation with an assistant, or a thought. The card is where you read it, mark it, write about it and connect it to other cards. You never have to fill anything in.
Reading a card
The top of a card says what kind of thing it is, which space it's in (and so who can see it), and where and when it was caught. Click the title to change it. Its tags sit under the title.
For a web page, Reader shows the text Caute read from it, and Archived page shows the page as it was saved. A PDF or an email shows the document itself, with a Reader tab for its text. A YouTube video has Video, Transcript and Saved page. Archived pages and documents are shown from a separate site, kept apart from your account, and nothing in them loads from elsewhere. The address under the title goes to the live page when there is one.
If you arrived from a search, the passage that matched is marked, with a link to show the whole thing.
Under the title you can put a page in your reading queue with Read later, then Mark as read when you're done.
Highlights
- In the reader, select some words.
- Choose Highlight.
The words stay marked, and the highlight is listed on the card's Notes tab and under Highlights on the Notes page. Choose write about it on a highlight and it becomes a note. Highlighting works on the reader's text, not inside the archived page.
The same toolbar has Quote in note, which starts a note with the passage quoted and a link back to the exact spot, and Copy quote.
Notes on a card
On the Notes tab, choose Write a note on this. The note opens beside the card and saves as you type. A note on a card in a shared space goes into your own inbox at first, and the note says where it is, so a private reaction stays private until you move it. See Notes.
Links and the Links tab
The Links tab shows everything connected to this card: cards you linked (Linked), notes that mention it (Mentioned in), cards it mentions, what arrived with it, such as an email's attachments, and the sources an assistant's answer cited.
- To make a link yourself, choose + Link a card and find the card.
- Might be related lists cards close in meaning. Nothing is linked until you choose ✓ to keep one or ✕ for "Not related". A link an assistant proposes waits here too, until you keep it, unless you allowed it to add links without asking you first.
- See as a graph opens the graph centred on this card.
The graph
The Graph shows how your cards connect. Solid lines are links people made; dashed lines are cards that might be related. Across the whole collection, cards close in meaning sit near each other, joined or not. Show related turns the dashed lines on or off, and a slider sets how many to draw. You can narrow it to a space or a tag, and find a card on it by name. Select a card to see what it touches; double-click to open it.
Info: properties and the capture record
The Info tab holds the card's own facts.
Properties are fields such as servings, a DOI or a due date, which you can filter by. Choose Add a property to add one. An app you connected can suggest values; they're shown with the app's name and do nothing until you choose Keep, or Dismiss to turn them away.
Capture record is written once by Caute when the card was caught, and nobody can change it, you included. It says when it was caught, how, by whom, the address asked for and where it arrived, and a fingerprint of what was caught. Check this copy tells you whether the copy Caute keeps still matches the one caught. That's all it says: whether it has changed since it was caught.
Watching a page for changes
On a web page, choose Tell me when this page changes. Caute reads the page again about once a week. When it changes, the new text is kept as a new version and the old one stays, and the change appears on Today under "Changed since you relied on it". Check now reads it straight away; Stop watching ends it.
When a card has more than one version, a line under its title says so. Version history lists every version, with Compare with the one before, which shows what was taken out and what was added, word by word. Only the newest version appears in your timeline and search; notes, tags and links move forward with each version.
To keep a new version of a file on the same card, open the card and choose Upload a new version… from the ··· menu. When you drop a file into Caute whose name matches one already saved, such as "Board deck v2.pptx" after "Board deck v1.pptx", Caute asks whether it is a new version of that card or a separate card. If you already have two cards for one thing, open the newer one and choose Add an earlier version…: the older card joins its version history, and its notes, tags and links move to the newer one.
Correcting the text
If the text Caute read from a page, document or scan is wrong, choose Edit text from the card's ··· menu, fix it and Save. Your text is shown and searched in its place, and your highlights move with their words. The card then says you edited it, with Show what was captured and Undo the edit.
Moving or copying a card
- Choose Move to… from the ··· menu.
- Under Move or copy to, choose a space.
- Caute checks first. It offers to take any files that came with the card, and names any cards this one mentions that people in that space won't be able to open.
- Choose Move it, or Copy it to leave the original where it is.
Everyone who can open the new space can read what you move there.
Deleting a card
Choose Delete… from the ··· menu. Its highlights, links and tags go with it. If you wrote notes on it, you choose: tick the box to also delete the notes written on it, or leave it unticked and they stay in Notes on their own. If Caute has several versions of the card, you can delete only this one or all of them. Deleting can't be undone. See Privacy and your data.
