The browser extension
The Caute extension catches a web page as it appears on your screen, including pages you're signed in to. It also catches a selection, a link or an image, and lets you search what you've caught without leaving the page.
Installing it
- Chrome: add Caute from the Chrome Web Store. The link is on the timeline's Getting started steps and in Settings → Phones and browsers at https://app.getcaute.com/settings/devices.
- Firefox: add Caute from Firefox Add-ons, linked from the same places.
- Safari: Caute for Safari comes with the Caute app for iPhone and with Caute for Mac, both coming soon to the App Store. On iPhone, turn it on in the phone's Settings, under Apps, Safari, Extensions, Caute, and allow it on all websites. On the Mac, choose Turn on Caute for Safari… from the Caute menu bar app. See iPhone and Mac.
Signing in
- Click the Caute icon in your browser's toolbar.
- Choose Sign in to Caute.
- A window opens where you sign in and approve the extension. There's nothing to copy or paste.
Firefox may also ask you to let the extension reach Caute; allow it.
In Safari there's no sign-in button. Open the Caute app and sign in there, and the extension uses that. Safari may ask you to allow Caute to reach Caute's server the first time; choose the button that offers it.
Catching a page
Click the Caute icon. The popup shows the page as it will look in your library, with a place to add tags, a note and the space it goes to. All of these are optional. Choose Catch this page.
Afterwards the popup stays open so you can add tags, Open in Caute, or Undo. Pages, PDFs and books go to Later, your reading queue, unless you've turned that off; the popup says which, with Just keep or Read later to change it.
You can also:
- press ⌘⇧S on a Mac, or Ctrl+Shift+S elsewhere, to catch the page without opening the popup
- right-click the page and choose Save page to Caute
- choose Catch link only in the popup to save the address without the page as you see it
If you've already caught the page, the popup says when, and shows its highlights, notes and tags. You can Save as new version, which keeps the earlier copy in the card's history, or Replace saved copy, which deletes it. Either way your highlights, notes and tags come along.
Catching a selection, link or image
- Select some text, then choose Catch selection in the popup, or right-click and choose Save selection to Caute. The words become their own card, with the page they came from.
- Right-click a link and choose Save link to Caute to catch the page it points to.
- Right-click an image and choose Save image to Caute.
After a right-click catch, the Caute icon shows a tick for a moment, or "!" if it didn't work.
When a page didn't save properly
Some sites show a check for robots, or refuse anything but a browser, when Caute fetches a page itself. Others build themselves after they load and come back empty. When that happens:
- Open the page in your browser, so the article is showing.
- Click the Caute icon. The popup explains what went wrong.
- Choose Catch what's on screen. This replaces the copy Caute couldn't read.
Items like this also appear in Needs attention in the web app, with Open the page to take you there.
Searching from the extension
The popup has a box marked "Search what you've caught". Results appear as you type; press Enter to open the one picked, or follow the "See all" link at the bottom to open every result in the web app.
Signing out
Open the extension's options page (right-click the Caute icon and choose Options) and choose Sign out. You can also disconnect it from Settings → Apps and tokens at https://app.getcaute.com/settings/apps, which signs it out the next time it tries to reach Caute.
In Safari, sign out in the Caute app. That signs Safari out too.
