Getting started

Caute keeps what you catch: web pages, files, emails, thoughts, photos and conversations with assistants. Everything you catch becomes a card you can find again by its words or by what it means. This page covers your first few minutes.

Signing in

Caute never uses a password. On the sign-in page at https://app.getcaute.com you have two ways in.

An emailed link

  1. Type your email address and choose Email me a sign-in link.
  2. Open the email and follow the link. It works once and expires after 15 minutes.

If the email doesn't arrive within a minute or two, look in your spam folder and check the address is spelled right. If you're new to Caute, the same link makes your account, free, with no card.

A passkey

Once you're signed in, you can add a passkey so you can sign in with Face ID, Touch ID or a security key, with no email to wait for.

  1. Open Settings → Account at https://app.getcaute.com/settings/account.
  2. Under Signing in, choose Add a passkey and follow your device's prompts.
  3. Next time, choose Sign in with a passkey on the sign-in page.

If your team uses company sign-in, type your work address and choose Sign in with my company. If your team requires it, Caute sends you there on its own.

The timeline

Caute opens on your timeline: everything you've caught, newest first, grouped by day. The bar along the top takes you to Timeline, Ask, Feed, Tags, Notes and Graph.

At the head of the timeline is a box. It does two things:

  • Type some words and press Enter to narrow the timeline to the cards that hold those words. Show everything puts it back.
  • Paste a link, a file or a thought, and Caute catches it. Choose Catch, or press ⌘ Enter (Ctrl Enter on Windows), to save what you typed as a thought.

Under the box you can switch between Tiles, Compact and Calendar views, narrow by kind (Pages, Documents, Thoughts, Images), show only what you wrote with Mine, or open your reading queue with Later. You can also pick a space or a tag.

Press / to jump to the box; on a page without one, it opens Ask. To search by meaning, ask a question of your library, or have Caute write something from it, use the Ask tab instead. See Finding things.

Catching your first thing

The quickest way is to paste a link into the timeline's box and press Enter. You can also drag a file onto any page in Caute; "Drop to save" appears while you hold it there.

When your library is empty, the timeline shows Getting started, with a step for each way in:

  • the browser extension for Chrome and Firefox
  • importing from another tool, at Settings → Import a library
  • forwarding email to a private address, at Settings → Email in
  • the Share menu on iPhone, Android and the Mac
  • connecting an AI assistant, at Settings → Connect an assistant

Every way to catch is on Catching things.

What you catch lands in your private inbox. Nobody else sees it unless you move it into a shared space.

Today

Once you have a few things saved, Today sits at the top of the timeline. It can show:

  • Look again: a passage you highlighted, with Keep (bring it back, less often each time), Again (bring it back tomorrow) and Done (don't bring it back).
  • Changed since you relied on it: a page you asked Caute to watch that has changed, with Compare to see the difference. To watch a page, open its card and choose Tell me when this page changes.
  • On this day: what you caught on this date in earlier years.
  • From Later: the oldest things waiting in your reading queue.

Today shows only on the whole timeline, not when you've narrowed it.

If you'd like a weekly email of the same kind of thing, turn on Weekly digest in Settings → Timeline and reading at https://app.getcaute.com/settings/reading. It's off unless you turn it on.

Settings and help

Open the menu with your email address at the top right of the page, then choose Settings. Settings is grouped as Account, Your library, Privacy and data, and Connections, with a box to find a setting by name. Sign out is in the same menu.

To ask a question, report a problem or suggest something, go to Settings → Help and feedback at https://app.getcaute.com/settings/help. A person at Caute reads every message and answers by email and on that page. Nothing from your library is sent with it.

Start keeping what you find.
