Privacy and your data

What you catch is private to you unless you put it somewhere shared. This page explains who can see what, what reaches an AI model and when, and how to take everything with you or close your account. Privacy and AI, in Settings, shows all of it for your own library on one page.

Spaces decide who can see what

Every card lives in exactly one space, and the space decides who can open it. Everything you catch lands in your private inbox unless you choose otherwise, and nothing goes into a shared space unless you put it there.

In a team, a space can be open to Everyone here, Only people I add, or Only me. Tags never change who can see a card. To manage spaces, open the spaces menu in the top bar and choose Spaces and people.

Apps, assistants and tokens see only the spaces you chose for them when you connected them. See Connecting an assistant.

Keeping a space away from AI

Any space can be kept away from AI. On Spaces and people, tick Keep away from AI beside the space. You can do this for a space only you can open; in a team, an owner or admin does it.

Nothing in that space is then summarised, described, asked about or put in a brief, and no connected app, assistant or personal token can see it or save into it. It stays searchable, and text is still read from its pictures and recordings are still transcribed, on Caute's own machines. Privacy and AI lists the spaces kept away.

On your iPhone, you can choose to have a question answered by the model built into the phone, from the cards and notes kept on it. That answer may draw on a space kept away from AI, because nothing leaves the phone: the question, the cards and the answer stay on it, and the answer is never sent to your account.

What reaches an AI model, and when

Searching, ranking results, reading text in pictures and transcription all run on Caute's own servers. Some features use Google's Gemini: short summaries and titles, descriptions of pictures, the words on a scanned page that Caute's own reader couldn't read well, answers in Ask, briefs, and names for the tags Caute proposes. For those, the relevant text or picture is sent to Google to produce the result, under terms that don't allow Google to train on it. Caute never uses what you save to train AI models, its own or anyone's.

An assistant you connect, such as Claude or ChatGPT, reads only what it asks for in the spaces you gave it. What it does with that is governed by its own privacy policy.

Your own model key

On Pro+ and Team, an owner or admin can add the workspace's own key for Gemini, Claude or ChatGPT, under Which AI answers on Privacy and AI. Ask and briefs then go to that company under your own agreement with them, not Caute's, at your own risk. Spaces kept away from AI stay away, and summaries and titles still use Caute's own provider. See Plans and billing.

What each app read

Apps and tokens shows, for each connected app, what it did in the last 30 days and which cards it read, and a card shows which assistants read it. Every request an app or token makes is recorded.

When you open a search result, Caute records the search, so search learns what's useful to you. Only you can see it. It is kept for 180 days, and Forget my search history on Privacy and AI clears it now.

The capture record

Everything Caute catches has a capture record, written once when it was caught: when, how it arrived, who caught it, and a fingerprint of the original as caught. Nobody can change it, you included. On a card's Info tab, Check this copy says whether the copy kept in Caute still matches the one caught. It says only whether the copy has changed since it was caught.

Export everything

On Export or delete, choose Export everything. If you belong to more than one workspace, pick which one first. You get a zip of everything you can read in that workspace: each file as you saved it, its text, your notes as Markdown, your highlights, tags and links, and each original with its capture record. It is ready in a few minutes, and the download is kept for a week. Export is never limited by plan.

Deleting your account

Under Delete my account on the same page, type your email address to confirm. This deletes your personal workspace and everything in it, your files included, and any team you're the only member of. You leave your other teams, and what you saved in their shared spaces stays with the team. Every sign-in, token, connected app and email address stops working, and a paid plan is cancelled. It can't be undone, so export first. Deleted data is gone from Caute's backups within 10 days.
